Professor Sophia Chan is currently Professor in Nursing and Director of Research in School of Nursing. She is the Deputy Director of Public Health Research Centre and Assistant Dean of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong. She is also the first nurse in Hong Kong to be awarded the Fellow of American Academy of Nursing (FAAN), and the Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health, Royal College of Physicians. Sophia’s research portfolio includes public health, tobacco control and health communication. Her earlier work explores comparative ethno-cultural differences between Chinese and other smokers through the synthesis of epidemiological and social science methodologies. She developed a programme of research to test nurses’ interventions to change smokers’ behaviour, and to protect children from exposure to second-hand smoke. Sophia is one of the top funded nursing researchers in Hong Kong, and publishes extensively in international journals in nursing, tobacco control, and public health. She consults internationally and was invited by the World Health Organisation to provide leadership on their tobacco control programme and policy workshops. She heads the Health Communication team in the HKJC FAMILY project, and has been leading various research projects to establish and disseminate evidence-based community-based participatory interventions in promoting health, happiness, and harmony among families in Hong Kong.
